Mix And Match Fashion: Be Your Own Wardrobe Stylist

Fashion is beginning to merge itself with social media. Fashion communities are popping up where you can mix and match pieces of clothing with shoes and various accessories and publish your fashion match for others in the network to see. Of course, no fashion site would be complete without telling you who sells the items and enabling you to purchase what you’ve styled (or the styles of others).

In a previous post I mentioned MyShape.com, a place where you can shop for put-together outfits based on your shape; sites like Polyvore and FashMatch have taken the idea of a clothing match site one step further by creating a community of members who are the driving force behind the mix and match ensembles allowing them to create outfits from pre-existing brands in their database and upload fashion items of their own for every fashion members mix and matching pleasure. Each site tells you the brand and store where the items are available, not only making the whole process fun (and addictive), but allowing you the ability to purchase some pretty terrific looking outfits.

Both sites offer top designer names and brands in fashion like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Burberry, Baby Phat, Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs (among many others), as well as brands that may be more for the budget oriented like Old Navy, Abercrombie & Fitch, Forever21 and Target. Both sites are also free to join, which is always a bonus if you are inclined to purchase clothes you fall in love with.

Honing your styling skills can be fun, especially with an audience filled with like-minded fashion addicts, but I can also see how it can be bad for your wallet when you find wardrobe after wardrobe that can’t seem to live without.

Outdated Outfit

Fashion is merciless. It beguiles kings and makes them slaves. It should come as no surprise that in the space of years (if not months) a perfectly fashionable dress or suit can go from tres chic to ho’ribble, what is surprising is when someone keeps wearing said outfit… for over fifty years!

No, this is not the White Dwarf Starlet, but rather a character who is identified with a type of outfit (or just one) and have kept the look for far too many years without getting an update. This is common in Comic Books where the story is set in the “Present Day” and the clothes become hilariously anachronistic. If they ever do get some new duds, expect much poking of the fun at their hilarious past fashion sense, while said character adamantly maintains the look is “still cool!” and it’s the world that’s out of touch.

On freedom, saris and kick-ass bags

I’ve just discovered Freeset bags (& journals) and just love what they are all about… Freedom for the women who have no choice but to roam Calcutta’s streets as prostitutes, and for their daughters.

dragonfly-bagsMy pick of the bags are these dragonfly print jute shoulder bags with cotton lining (the handles are lined too to be comfortable on bare shoulders) with a cell phone pocket.

“Each Freeset Bag tells a story of one woman’s journey to freedom. She used to stand with 6,000 other prostitutes in a small but well known area of North Calcutta. She didn’t choose her profession; it chose her. Poverty does that. It robs people of their dignity and children of their innocence.

She still lives in the same area, but instead of selling her body she makes Freeset Bags. Now she has choices, the choice to work decent hours for decent pay, to re-establish her dignity in her community and to learn to read and write. Now her daughter won’t have to stand in the street selling her body like her mother used to. Freedom has been passed on to the next generation.” – from the Freeset website.

kantha-journalsAlso check out these wood-free Kantha journals. They are handbound, with a kantha- stitch multilayered cover, a screen-printed pencil and white wool paper. Each journal is unique. They are made by the daughters of sex workers. Freeset’s goal is to bring wholeness and restoration to their lives. Many tragic stories are told by the girls. By giving these girls a dignified job, Freeset have given them a step up, to gain respect by society. The cycle of shame is broken!

Freeset products are available in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.

Spring Fashion Trend: Tie Dye

Color has been dominating this season from the runway to Eva Longoria’s and Christina Applegate’s gowns at the Golden Globes. Color is a great accessory to turn a drab outfit and make it spectacular. Whether you’re vacationing for the winter time, or accessorizing in complete style, tie dye has yet to come out of style from the seventies. Now I’m not talking about the tie dye that you make at your friends house for $5, but tie dye done right. The look is always fresh whether worn by 5 year old twins to their mother’s new bebe leather pumps to their grandmother’s Susan Farber leather handbag. Here’s some hot spring looks that incorporate this timeless style:

Everyone has been buzzing about Michael Kors new Spring Collection where he combines 50’s and 80’s styles into one great look. In addition, his new Spring 2009 Resort Collection has a lot of pretty fresh blue tones, beige, pink and hints of orange with all kinds of fun patterns and swirls. When packing for a mid-winter vacation or just heading out in the sun, Michael Kors new collection is one to follow.

One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is to look at what is hot in London because their fashion is always ahead of ours and impeccable. They are showing a more feminine side of tie dye this year to soften your look. The light tie dye effect, or dip dying, can take a splash of a pretty vibrant pink and tone it down into an elegant plum.

If tie dye dresses and shoes aren’t really your thing, Calleen Cordero has some great tie dye bangles or if you are more of a handbag girl, Rebecca Minkoff has hot new handbag’s dipped in dye. For a more winter feel, Micheal Kors also has some great cashmere tie dye scarves. For more tie dye looks for the season look at websites by designers such as Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Ombre, bebe, Christian Lacroix, Moshino, Calleen Cordero, D&G and Rebecca Minkoff.

What do you think of this spring trend?

Wholesale Clothing for the Public

In this day and age where money is hard to come by, women that are into fashion can still afford quality apparel with the least money to spend. The internet is a good source to find the latest fashion for a lot less money through buying wholesale clothing from wholesale apparel closeout companies. Get them for $4 a piece for the same exact price as you can get from the retail shop at $20 a piece or more. Just a piece of advice for shopaholics!
